“Inside Their World: New Exhibit Connects Harlem Renaissance to Today”

“The Harlem Renaissance has come to the University of Virginia’s Grounds,” begins a UVA Today article featuring the Library’s newest exhibition. “[The exhibition] examines the works in the period of Black artistic and intellectual activity centered in a New York neighborhood. The Harlem Renaissance began in the early 1900s as racist violence and diminishing economic opportunity pushed Black Southerners to head north in a movement known as the Great Migration.”

Major new Harlem Renaissance exhibition opens Sept. 13

Featuring the visionary works of writers, artists, and thinkers of the Harlem Renaissance, “Their World As Big As They Made It” examines the creative and intellectual pursuits that defined Black American identity and political consciousness.

    “The idea is to train an artificial intelligence model to help with this speech recognition into text, and that requires a significant data set,” said Lisa Blackmore, the faculty director of UVA Library’s Digital Humanities Center. “This project is a great example of how AI can be used in experimental and creative ways as part of socially engaged research.”
