On March 1, the University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors voted to name the University’s newly renovated main library The Edgar Shannon Library, in honor of UVA’s fourth president.
UVA Library is combining tradition with technology in an effort researchers say will help preserve and expand access to Guna culture for a global audience.
The UVA project took about two years and involved research in UVA’s Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library; trips to Monticello, Montpelier and Highland; and working with the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center.
The Library of Virginia and the University of Virginia will host a talk in late September about the role libraries play in an increasingly AI-driven world.
“The idea is to train an artificial intelligence model to help with this speech recognition into text, and that requires a significant data set,” said Lisa Blackmore, the faculty director of UVA Library’s Digital Humanities Center. “This project is a great example of how AI can be used in experimental and creative ways as part of socially engaged research.”
