Access the New Yorker and Harper’s Magazine through UVA Library

UVA Library is now offering free access to online editions of the New Yorker and Harper’s Magazine, giving UVA community members a gateway to two of the most esteemed publications in the United States. Both magazines are known for their long-form journalism, literary fiction, criticism, and cartoons. Harper’s Magazine has won 22 National Magazine Awards and the New Yorker has won 59, as well as 11 Pulitzer Prizes.

Four "The New Yorker" magazine covers featuring different illustrations: a detailed park scene with a fence, a bustling city scene in front of a grand building, a person reading while hanging upside down in an urban setting, and a surreal image of a hand holding an autumn tree under a clear sky. Each cover includes the publication date at the bottom.

Expanded access to full-color publications

While the Library has always had access to current articles in these magazines through a news aggregation database, as of this fall it now offers the “official,” full, online publications. “Through Opinion Archives [a database of American magazines], we now have access to a full-color replica of the print version of the New Yorker,” said Leigh Rockey, Librarian for Collections Management & Video Resources. “For Harper’s Magazine, we have the full current issue with color and illustrations, also through Opinion Archives, but the experience is not an exact replica of the print.”

A series of five Harper's Magazine covers featuring various themes, including soldiers, education reform, Shakespeare, and moral values.

Access the New Yorker and Harper’s Magazine through Opinion Archives in the A-Z Databases listing on the Library’s website. These magazines are available to active students, faculty, and staff using a virginia.edu email account; there are no special instructions needed to access either publication beyond clicking the links above.
