By Molly Minturn |

The University of Virginia Library has six locations; an array of cozy study spaces; millions of books, journals, videos, newspapers available for checkout or browsing; and new resources arriving each day. And did you know we also offer events ranging from exhibitions to concerts for UVA and the Charlottesville community throughout the year?

Below, check out five upcoming events for those who love crafting, bookbinding, spatial mapping, and more. All Library events are free.

A vintage-style graphic poster for a research workshop titled "Costuming Bridgerton." The poster features the silhouettes of a woman and a man dressed in Regency-era attire. The text reads: "Costuming Bridgerton: A Research Workshop, September 25, 4-6 PM, Clemons 407." The border is decorated with intricate black floral designs, giving it an elegant and historic look.1. Costuming Bridgerton: A Research Workshop

Prepare yourselves for a delightful dive into the fashionable world of Bridgerton! Join us for a workshop where you’ll learn the art of costume research. We’ll examine Regency-era fashion, explore how to find credible historical sources, and learn from costume technologist Marcy Linton how to examine textiles for research clues. Expect lively discussions, creative activities, and plenty of chances to step back in time to the regency-era. Even Lady Whistledown might approve!

A split image. On the left, a smiling man with medium-length locs and a beard is wearing a dark jacket and sitting outdoors against a backdrop of greenery. On the right, there is a vintage-style illustration of a sailing ship on the sea with the text "Tracy W. McGregor" at the bottom in a decorative font.2. Lecture: The Stadium in American Life

Stadiums are commonly viewed as sports and entertainment venues where fans behold breathtaking performances by athletes and concert performers. For the 18th Tracy W. and Katherine W. McGregor Distinguished Lecture in American History, Frank Guridy will show how stadiums are actually barometers of the state of democracy and the fate of the nation.

Guridy is the Dr. Kenneth and Kareitha Forde Professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies at Columbia University.

A 3D rendering of the Earth focusing on Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia. The continents are shown in green, with varying shades indicating different elevations. The surrounding oceans are depicted in blue, and Greenland is visible at the top left, covered in white to represent ice. The globe is slightly tilted to the left, providing a clear view of the landmasses and water bodies.3. GIS Workshop - Points on Your Map: Street Addresses and More Spatial Things

Do you have a list of street addresses crying out to be mapped? Have a list of zip codes or census tracts you wish to associate with other data?  We’ll start with addresses and other things spatial and end with points on a map, ready for visualization and analysis. Participants do not need to have previous experience using GIS. This workshop will be a hands-on demonstration with step-by-step tutorials and expert assistance.

This session is part of a larger series of GIS Workshops. Visit the Scholars’ Lab blog for more information.

A decorative glass bottle filled with a glowing blue liquid. The bottle is topped with a cork covered in black wax, which has dripped down the sides. A small skull adorns the top of the cork, adding a spooky effect. The base of the bottle is wrapped in a bone-like material, enhancing the eerie, gothic aesthetic. The background is blurred, drawing focus to the illuminated bottle.4. Cosplay Costuming & Crafts Club – Color Shifting Potions Session

Come make your own color shifting potions with the Cosplay Costuming & Crafts Club! All supplies and materials will be provided (though you are encouraged to bring your own bottles and jars if you have a favorite potion vessel you want to use). The workshop lasts three hours; you are encouraged to arrive on time so you have the full workshop to work on your project, but feel free to leave early if you finish your project before the end of the event time. In this session, you will make a dual-color changing potion using different dyes and mica powder, as well as embellish your productions with foam clay, twine, wax/glue and other decorative designs.

If this workshop fills up or doesn’t work with your schedule, a second one is being offered on Oct. 11.

A collage of several open planners and journals, each filled with colorful drawings, handwritten notes, stickers, and decorations. Some pages feature illustrations of cute characters and animals, while others display organized schedules, meal plans, and photos of food. The vibrant and creative layouts reflect a mix of artistic journaling and meticulous planning.5. Make Your Own Hobonichi Techo (Beginner Bookbinding)

Create a Hobonichi Techo-style journal with beginner bookbinding techniques. (A Hobonichi Techo is a Japanese daily planner.) Decorate with photos, stickers, travel receipts, stamps, or whatever you can imagine! Use our photo booth and our mini press to make prints. Materials will be provided but feel free to bring your own items to fill your journal. Please email us with any questions at slabmakerspace@virginia.edu.
