Student Library workers featured in UVA Today

Two fourth-year UVA Library student workers, Andrew Spencer and SuLing Llanes-Trexler, were profiled in UVA Today this week in a story about their unlikely friendship.

The article, by University News Associate Alice Berry, initially details their guarded first impressions of one another:

The fourth-year students at the University of Virginia met while working in the UVA Library’s Digital Production Group. Although their supervisor, Rob Smith, nudged Spencer to introduce himself, their friendship took time to develop.

“Maybe I shouldn’t say this, but I thought she was just a mean, quiet little person,” Spencer, a computer science major from Chesterfield, said.

“I thought he was really quiet and maybe a little mean, just because sometimes he’s very brief with what he says,” Llanes-Trexler said.

Read the article to learn about how their friendship bloomed and the various musical adventures they’ve taken together during their time at UVA, including karaoke nights at the self-described dive bar Dürty Nelly’s.

UVA Library’s Digital Production Group, where the students met, creates and preserves the Library’s unique digital items. The group also handles requests from the UVA community for digitization and online access of Library materials.

“Andrew and SuLing have been exceptional student employees,” said Smith, the Digital Production Group Project Manager. “We have super high standards and they know them and follow them backwards and forwards. They are good workers – even coming in on snow days and Spring Break! – and good people with good spirit.”

We at UVA Library commend all of our fourth-year student workers as they prepare to graduate later this month. Congratulations to the Class of 2025!
