The New Mexico State University Library has decided not to renew 433 scholarly journals subscriptions in the wake of university budget cuts.
About one-third of the subscriptions cut were titles in a package from Elsevier, one of the largest publishers of scholarly journals in the world.
Canceling the Elsevier package alone will save the university $400,000 right now, in Fiscal Year 2020-21, and an additional $400,000 in Fiscal Year 2021-22, according to Katherine Terpis, interim dean of the NMSU Library. According to a statement, Elsevier has had unsustainable price increases that exceeded the cost of inflation in past years.
