PaperCut Printing
- These machines will only print on 8.5 x 11 paper. If your document is larger than 8.5 x 11, you can scale it to fit within the document’s print properties before sending it to the printer.
- Printers are COLOR by default. Change to B&W to avoid unnecessary charges.
- Cost to print: B&W prints cost 8 cents per page. Color prints cost 60 cents per page.
- Cards and Payment: The new system works with the latest generation of University ID cards, featuring an embedded chip. Older “magnetic strip-only” cards and generic Cavalier Advantage cards will no longer work.
- Sending a document from your device (tied to your eservices account) and having a friend pay for it using their card is not possible. If you wish to do this, the friend doing the paying must also send the document to HoosPrint.
- Printers are provided and serviced by University Printing & Copying Services (PCS). Library staff may be able to troubleshoot minor problems, but for technical assistance, compliments, or complaints please contact PCS directly at 434-924-3785 or visit the Print Service Portal.

Library printing troubleshooting
Are you on eduroam wifi or UVA VPN?
Your device must be on eduroam wifi or the UVA VPN to connect to the printer. Make sure you are not using your own cellular service.
Did you select “HoosPrint” as the printer?
If you chose an individual printer (ex. PL-12345), go back and select HoosPrint from the printer drop down menu. If HoosPrint is not on your menu, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the PaperCut software.
Did you log in with your Netbadge credentials?
When prompted for a user name and password, use your computing ID and password, not your own local computer’s username and password. Netbadge credentials are the same used for logging into SIS or your UVA email.
Print job is showing “Hold for Authentication” (Mac users):
Your computer has auto-filled your computer login and password into the print job management application. To authenticate the print job you need to enter your UVA computing ID and password.
- Open the print job management application (printer icon on dock).
- Near the name of the file you want to print, click on the lock icon or arrow icon (refresh icon). Your screen will display one or the other, but not both. A popup will appear with login credentials.
- Replace your computer login and password with your Netbadge username and password. Select ‘Remember this password’.
- You may need to repeat the process when you update your password annually through UVA IT.
Check the paper size:
Open the document you want to print and print it at Letter or 8.5x11.
Printer shows ‘Insufficient Funds’:
You will need to add funds to your Cavalier Cash account at: idoffice.virginia.edu/cav-cash
Your ID is not accepted by the printer:
You need to re-authenticate your account on the printer; usually this happens because you’ve recently updated your Netbadge password.
Still can’t print?
Log into a public computer at the library and print your document from there. The PaperCut software is already installed, but you will still need to check the paper size and your CavCash funds
