Affirmation of values

The University of Virginia Library is an open and inclusive community that embraces the full spectrum of human attributes, perspectives, and cultures.

The values of respect, integrity, diversity and inclusion, collaboration, and innovation guide our organization, our behavior, and our interactions.

We recognize the dignity of others in both in public and private discourse. We value openness, fairness, and trustworthiness. We encourage and celebrate our differences, seeking out numerous perspectives, including those that challenge the status quo.

We are committed to the academic success of our diverse community, and we work hard to promote understanding and inclusion through librarianship.

We endorse the recent statements on inclusion and immigration by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), of which we are a member institution, and we adhere to the University of Virginia’s core values identified in its mission statement:

  • enduring commitment to a vibrant and unique residential learning environment marked by the free and collegial exchange of ideas;
  • unwavering support of a collaborative, diverse community bound together by distinctive foundational values of honor, integrity, trust, and respect;
  • universal dedication to excellence and affordable access.

This Library is open to all, and all are welcome here.
