Established by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, the University of Virginia Library is known for exceptional public service, beautiful spaces, strong collections, and pioneering uses of technology in its support of faculty and students. The Library holds more than five million books and 20 million manuscripts and archives, as well as digital image collections, maps, musical scores, DVDs and more.

The Library regularly receives major grant funding, especially for its digital and preservation projects. Its special collections are internationally known, particularly in the area of American history, literature, and culture. The Library builds collaborative programs with scholars from around the University and other institutions, creating a vibrant environment of collegial innovation.
